Tantric Theravada: A Bibliographic Essay on the Writings of Franois Bizot and others on the Yogavacara Tradition

Kate Crosby, Cardiff University

Over the past three decades Franeois Bizot has produced a series of studies of Southeast Asian Buddhism that should have radically changed our understanding of Theravada. His findings indicate the presence of an esoteric tradition of texts and practices within the Theravada of mainland Southeast Asia that is far removed from the rationalistic monolithic Theravada presented in many secondary sources.

Theravada, or The Teaching of Elders, is generally considered to be the most rationalistic and atheistic school of Buddhism. Tantra is based on the mistical union with a worshipped deity.
